In the area and looking for Nashville’s best hot spots and upcoming events? Pick up a copy of The Nashville Scene. We just call it “the ‘Scene” ’round these here parts, but that won’t help you when you’re skimming the newsstand.

While you’re there pick up All the Rage too. You know, just in case.

Rockin’ at the Ryman

Ryman Auditorium

Last Tuesday night I had the fortunate experience of seeing Patty Griffin at the historical Ryman Auditorium. If you want to know about the amazing encounter that is Patty Griffin, you can go here. If you want to know about the famed “house of history” that is the Ryman, stay right where you are.

Located just off Broadway on 5th in the heart of downtown Nashville sits a prestigous, yet quaint red church building inlaid with beautiful stained glass and white trim. Built in the late 1800’s by Captain Thomas G. Ryman, this now-country music icon is fondly referred to by locals as The Mother Church.

The Ryman is historic Nashville at it’s finest. If you’re in the area for just a short trip, make the most of your time here and visit this treasured church building. If you have time, take the tour. Or better yet - catch a concert - it doesn’t matter who’s playing either. Nashvillians have a saying here: everyone sounds better at the Ryman. Meaning, there’s no such thing as a bad show here. Even if you’re not a big fan of the band or artist, it is guaranteed to be a special event. The Ryman just does that to people. And it’s a big reason why we love her so.

5 years in Nashville, and just getting started

Tuesday, May 8th, 2007

So you meet someone new and immediately you’re thinking, “What’s this person’s deal? Where are they from? What do they do? How did they get here?” etc… And yes, yes you do, so don’t lie.

Hi, I’m Emily. I’m new here at 451 and here’s my deal:

I started out in ‘77 in California, born in the heart of the Mojave Desert. A couple of years later we up and moved to Abilene, Texas where I developed a taste for wildflowers (literally, but I haven’t eaten a flower since….so stop judging). When I was approaching the 5th grade we moved again to Manassas, Virginia where I lived among the ghosts of battlegrounds, and passed by historical log cabins on the interstate, and fell in love with summer camp in the Blue Ridge mountains. Right smack-dab in the middle of highschool, we moved once again. This time to the murky and tropical estuaries of Tampa Bay. I finished out my palm-tree lined highschool years and decided I had spent too much time in the sun. So I applied to one school and one school only in a little one stop-light town in west Tennessee. My four years there were wonderful; however, I jokingly made mention that I would never live in Tennessee again. From there I headed back to Tampa to pursue a career in Marketing and found two things: 1) I did not like working in Marketing, and 2) I did not like living in Florida. It was time to spread my wings. It was time to find myself. It was time to get out of my parents house!! Guess where I ended up? Folks, I would say it is unwise to use the words “never”, because the #1 affect it has on your circumstances is a guarantee that it’s definitely gonna happen to you. But this “never” ended up being the best thing I ever did. Yes, I ended up in Tennessee. And by choice I might add. And not JUST Tennesee, but the best city in Tennesee. The capital. The mecca. The beautful - Nashville.

I’ve shared my entire geographical history with you to preface this: of all the places I’ve lived, Nashville is my home.

Welcome to my blog “About Nashville, TN” and enjoy this great city through the eyes of a loving local.
